The Head Office of the North Eastern Railway

The Head Office 2008

The grand headquarters of the North Eastern Railway (NER), “a huge palace of business”, was completed in 1906.

The architect was Horace Field, an unusual choice as he was living in London and didn't have a proven track record.  However he worked well with William Bell, NER's company architect, to produce a remarkable building.

In a nod to its own company history the building has shields and badges marking the early railway companies which amalgamated in 1854 to form the NER, as well as the York Coat of Arms.
