Wartime York

First World War postcard - York Castle Museum

York began as a fortress and has been pivotal in many battles and campaigns over the centuries.

The city remained a garrison town but when the Great War broke out in 1914 it had been many generations since the last serious conflict.

Families were devastated as all eligible men were sent off to the front and Zeppelin raids were the first direct attacks on York since the Civil War siege of the city.

The Second World War brought more of the same, with even greater threat from the skies.
