Norman
When York was conquered by William, the Norman invaders were determined to make their mark. And so they did. To impose the new king’s authority on the rebellious city, William’s forces left much of it in ruins and built two castles.
Yet the Norman era which began so badly ended well for York. The Minster was reconstructed, a new Abbey and dozens of new churches built, some of which survive today.
Traders were starting to prosper, laying the foundations for years of economic success.
And the city had a new name: York.
