Soup Toureen with Horse Handle

The Merchant Adventurers has accumulated all sorts of momentos over the centuries.

This oval shaped soup tureen commemorates a race meeting.  It is decorated with panels of acanthus leaf intersected by bulrush plants.  At the base of the tureen is a band of concave fluting, each side having a scroll-shaped cartouche.  One of these is engraved:

'York Meeting August 1824. Earl of Scarborough, Lord Milton M.P. and Jas Wortley Esq. , M.P. Stewards'.

The other cartouche is engraved:

'Won by Angler August 21 1824'

The dome covering the belly of the tureen is also fluted and features a standing horse on top which also forms a handle. The tureen may be found in the Governor's Parlour.
